Wales vs Switzerland Euro 2020 Group A Game
Two tiny nations with strong footballing traditions face off in the opening game of Group A in Euro 2020 when Wales take on Switzerland at the Olympic Stadium in Baku on June 13 at 3 PM CET
How Wales Qualified
Four years ago, Wales captured the imagination of football fans worldwide with their exciting run to the Euro2016 semi-finals, highlighted with their victory over Belgium. Failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup brought them back down to earth with a bump, but under the guidance of former Welsh international and Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs, Wales qualified by finishing second to Croatia in Euro2020 qualifying Group E.
In that group, Wales began badly, with back to back defeats to Croatia and Hungary. However, they then went undefeated for the rest of their qualifying games, drawing with Croatia and defeating Hungary in the process.
How Switzerland Qualified
Perhaps Switzerland’s greatest ever moment as an international football team was defeating Spain in their opening game of 2010. Spain went on to win the World Cup that year, the only team ever to lose their opening match and go on to lift the trophy. In fact Switzerland would be the only team to beat Spain in a major competition – qualifying or finals – for eight years from 2006-2014.
Typically, Swiss teams are filled with physically imposing players who are excellent in set piece situations.
The Swiss qualified for euro 2020 by winning Group D with a record of five wins, two draws and one loss. Denmark finished second in that group and also qualified, with the Republic of Ireland finishing third.
Wales vs Switzerland Stats & Analysis
The Welsh and Swiss National football teams have met seven times previously, with the head-to-head 5-2 in Switzerland’s favour. These teams played each other three times in friendlies between 1949 in 1996, and then faced each other twice in European Championship qualification tournaments. In 1999, the Swiss team won both qualifying fixtures by the same scoreline of 2-0. Most recently, the Swiss won 4-1 in 2010, but the Welsh defeated them 2-0 in the return leg the following year.
In the latest FIFA World Rankings Switzerland are in 12th spot, with Wales 11 places lower in 23rd although in terms of ranking points there are less than 50 between them. Wales achievement of finishing fourth in the 2016 European Championships trumps anything the Swiss national team have achieved in their history. However, historically Switzerland have ranked higher than Wales, frequently featuring in the top 10.
Wales vs Switzerland Best Bet
With this being the opening fixture on this competition, the other group members being Italy on Turkey, either or both teams may be out to secure three points. The Swiss are renowned for their tightly packed midfield and strong defence, while the Welsh have the more skilful players.
This looks set to be a draw, but if Gareth Bale is fit for this game, he will be the difference, with Wales edging the match 1-0.
Wales 1-0 Switzerland – 17/2
